Mental health is an important part of our overall health at every stage of life. Experiences such as stress, anxiety, low mood, and burnout are common, and seeking support early can make a meaningful difference in your well-being and quality of life.
Across Canada, mental health concerns affect millions of people. Research from Mental Health Research Canada highlights how widespread these experiences are. In their 2025 surveys, approximately 1 in 10 Canadians reported experiencing high levels of anxiety and/or depression. Additionally, about 1 in 4 Canadians will receive a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder at some point in their lifetime (source, Poll 18 and 24, full report, p. 9). These findings emphasize how common mental health challenges can be, and they can often be neglected.
Despite growing awareness, many people still face barriers when trying to access the support they need. Surveys from the same reports found that 1 in 2 people (52% of Canadians) experiencing mental health difficulties are not receiving the help they need (Poll 17 and 24, full report, pp. 30-31). For some individuals, this may be due to limited access to services, uncertainty about where to begin, or hesitation about seeking help.
Mental health concerns can affect people of all ages, including children, teens, adults, and seniors. A wide range of factors can influence emotional well-being. Life transitions, school pressures, workplace stress, family responsibilities, physical health conditions, and other major life changes can all contribute to mental health challenges. Furthermore, these challenges do not always appear suddenly. In many cases, they develop gradually and may first show up as subtle changes in mood, behaviour, or daily habits.
Ongoing stress, changes in sleep or appetite, low energy, difficulty concentrating, or feeling overwhelmed may be signs that it could be helpful to speak with your healthcare provider. Some people may also notice increased irritability, loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed, or persistent feelings of worry or sadness. These experiences are common and do not mean that you or anyone with these experiences have to manage them alone.
For many people, a family doctor can be the first step in accessing mental health care. Primary care visits provide a safe and confidential space to discuss emotional well-being, identify possible contributing factors, and explore support options. During these conversations, healthcare providers may ask about sleep patterns, stress levels, physical health, lifestyle habits, and different factors that can play a role or have an impact on your mental health.
Depending on individual needs, support options may include lifestyle guidance, counselling referrals, community resources, or treatment when appropriate. Family physicians can also help coordinate care with other mental health professionals to ensure patients receive comprehensive and well-rounded support.

It is also important to remember that mental and physical health are closely connected. Ongoing stress or untreated mental health concerns can affect sleep, energy levels, immune health, and even chronic conditions such as heart disease. At the same time, caring for your mental well-being through healthy routines, social connection, and professional support can positively influence your overall physical health and quality of life.
Another important note: Supporting mental health might not always require major changes. Small habits can make a meaningful difference, such as maintaining regular sleep routines, staying physically active, connecting with friends or family, and taking time to rest and recharge when life feels overwhelming. Seeking support early can also help prevent challenges from becoming more difficult to manage over time.
